Guwahati: Operation Against Traffic Rule Violators in City

GUWAHATI: On Wednesday night in Guwahati, the District office of the Transport Department carried out an operation against traffic lawbreakers. According to the reports, Guwahati has reported a number of traffic accidents during the last few months.

Sources claim that the operation was directed toward the city's drunk drivers and traffic infractions. Several violators received fines throughout the operation. The procedure was carried out to stop the state's frequent traffic accidents. If the violators are discovered to be driving while intoxicated, the agency warned to be even stricter.

One person suffered significant injuries in a vehicle accident that happened in Hatigaon in September. The driver of a speeding car lost control and slammed into the street lights, totaling the vehicle. Even with strict laws and regulations, drinking and driving are still one of Assam's biggest contributors to traffic accidents.

According to sources, the Assam police have launched a massive operation across the state to prevent drunk driving. The state's chief minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, was in charge of the campaign leading up to New Year's Eve 2021. He posted video appeals on social media and local television stations pleading with drivers to refrain from drinking and driving and to drive safely.

Around 7,200 road accidents have been reported by the municipal traffic police since 2010, with 4,130 of those incidents (or 57.4%) being determined to be the result of drunk driving. According to government statistics, "about 1979 persons lost their lives in traffic accidents in the city during this era, with two-wheelers, buses, trekkers, and auto-vans being the top culprits."

On the other hand, the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) revealed that in 2015, 1.5% of all traffic incidents nationwide were caused by intoxicated drivers. Overspeeding is the most frequent cause of accidents on the nation's roads, accounting for almost 43% of all accidents, according to NCRB. Over 31% of accidents are the result of reckless driving, which includes infractions like lane switching and improper overtaking.
