GUWAHATI: The Assam government has taken a major step towards enhancing food security by revealing its intention to issue ration cards to more than 42 lakh fresh recipients, commencing January 16, 2024. The purpose of this endeavor is to furnish vital support for the indigent and enable them access subsidized grain supplies as well as additional perks available through the Public Distribution System (PDS).

During a media briefing, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stressed the state government's dedication to ensuring that all qualified citizens receive ration cards. The distribution process will commence on January 16 and conclude on January 25, 2024, with cabinet ministers leading it in each constituency.

According to CM Sarma, the initiative not only demonstrates crucial assistance but also indicates a favorable trend as the population in the state reaches balance. The plan aims to provide each ration card for families that consist of no less than four members and will cater to 10,73479 beneficiaries altogether.

In addition, Chief Minister Sarma presented plans for the future and announced that all individuals with ration cards will qualify for participation in the Orunodoi scheme. Furthermore, there are deliberations to integrate an insurance program called the PM insurance scheme specifically designed for those holding a ration card.

To be eligible for a ration card in Assam, one must have permanent residency and an annual family income that does not exceed Rs 4 lakh. As part of its efforts to simplify the application process, the government mandates providing detailed personal information along with birth certificates for minors; certified copies of Voter Lists; and evidence indicating payment or taxation on land revenue receipts.

Remarkably, the plan conforms to the government's promise of improving access to food for its citizenry, demonstrating a strong resolve towards bettering the lives of disadvantaged inhabitants. The allocation procedure entails not only delivering essential goods at discounted prices but also encompasses an Ayushman card as an additional perk, conferring dual advantages upon new recipients.

The Assam government's initiative showcases a proactive approach towards guaranteeing underprivileged individuals in the state are equipped with essential resources. This move cements its dedication to promoting the welfare of residents as topmost priority.
