Guwahati woman attacked by a stranger who claimed to be a 'relative', robbed of gold

Guwahati: In a shocking incident reported from Assam's Guwahati city, a girl appearing to be in her twenties attacked an elderly woman at her house at Six Mile area and fled with precious gold ornaments. The girl had reportedly claimed that she was a relative of the old woman.

The victim of this incident has been identified as Anjana Dutta, wife of Prabodh Dutta, a retired director of the Assam Agriculture University. According to reports in the media, the woman was alone in her house in Guwahati's Chandan Nagar area around 5:30 pm on October 10 when she was visited by the would-be assailant. The girl claimed to related to the elderly woman's husband in Pathsala, and said that she had come to invite them to her wedding.

The girl claimed that her name was 'Debangshi Bhuyan' and as per the woman's daughter Rupashree Dutta, she looked "decent."

According to Rupashree, the girl asked the woman some "uncomfortable" questions related to jewellery in her house and insisted on seeing the "designs."

When Anjana Dutta went to open the door to let her out, the girl hit her head with a hammer from the back and she fell on the floor. She hit the elderly woman not once, not twice, but three times until she fell down to the floor, close to death. Thereafter, she fled from the house. Tenants downstairs saw her disappearing out the gate.

Meanwhile, the victim Dutta has been admitted to the city's GNRC Hospital with grievous injuries on her head and eyes.

Based on a complaint filed by the victim's family, the Dispur police has registered a case (no -2356) under IPC section 325 and collected evidence from the house. A search for the assailant is on.
