GUWAHATI: Prominent author Vijay Kumar Dewan expired on January 18 in Guwahati due to health illness. The 78-year-old author was a prominent writer of books exceeding a hundred pieces of writing pertaining to law. Dewan had been involved in several social activities of myriad causes and had been participating in numerous organizations inclusive of Punjabi Sabha, Bar Council, Cooperative Bank, Lions Club International, All India Cine Writer's Association, and substantially more.
Being a lawyer by profession, Dewan had been practicing law since the years starting from 1968 to 1972. His initial work was Rent Control Legislation authored in 1973 and published in 1975 by Orient Law House. Owing to subjects of legal matters, Dewan continued to pen down various other books regarding matters related to law.
He also wrote pieces of work on the subjects comprising Cases and Materials on IPC, Key to Injunction, Consumer Digest, Law of Injunction, Terrorist Act, Supreme Court on Civil References, Commentary on Arbitration Act, Dishonour of Cheque, North East Local Acts and several others. The latest book Dewan authored was 'Cruelty and Offenses Against Husband'. Dewan's sudden departure left his family and his followers distressed and is survived by a son and two daughters.
Earlier today, veteran Assamese poet and a recipient of the Jnanpith Award Nilmani Phookan departed his life in Guwahati at the age of 89. Phookan who is survived by his wife Dulumoni Phookan, a daughter and two sons, was admitted to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) in Guwahati on Wednesday. The poet expired at GMCH around 11.50 am on Thursday due to old-age illnesses.
