Guwahati’s Maligaon Flyover Will Be Inaugurated On August 28, Assam CM Announces

GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday announced that the inauguration of the Maligaon Flyover will take place on August 28, in an announcement that will come as a huge relief for commuters in Guwahati coming to and from the Jalukbari side.

The Chief Minister made this big announcement while attending an event at Guwahati’s Srimanta Sankardeva Kalakshetra.

The commuters on the Bharalumukh- Jalukbari stretch of road in Guwahati as well as the residents of Maligaon and nearby areas have been suffering from huge traffic congestion since the construction works for the flyover started.

Moreover, it is not just the traffic congestion, especially during rush hours, but several major accidents that also took place due to the ongoing construction works.

Saturday’s announcement by the Chief Minister that the Maligaon flyover will be inaugurated on August 28 comes as a big relief for the commuters as well as residents of Maligaon area, who are eagerly waiting for the day when the flyover will be opened for traffic.

In the middle of last month, Himanta Biswa Sarma made a late night visit to the under-construction Maligaon flyover and took stock of the progress in work.

A day earlier, two people were injured when an iron shuttering slab, used for concreting purposes, fell on them while they were on their way on the road underneath the under-construction flyover project. Their vehicle was also damaged as a result of the heavyweight slab falling on top of it.

This again came just a few days after a video emerged on social media showing sparks discharged from the ongoing welding works at the flyover falling unhindered on the vehicles passing directly underneath, making the situation very dangerous.

CM Sarma also paid a visit to the hospital where the injured were being treated and enquired about their condition.

Later, speaking to reporters, he said at that time that the Maligaon flyover will be inaugurated before the Durga Puja festival this year. The deadline given for the inauguration on Saturday is in line with his assurance at that time.

While visiting the flyover construction site, the chief minister had also informed that vehicular movement in the construction site was being restricted at night due to ongoing construction works. Moreover, Ambubachi Mela was around the corner at that time and the residents in and around the Maligaon area became concerned that it may lead to huge traffic congestion and in addition, accidents may happen. As a result, an order was issued for the workers to restrict their work for the construction of the flyover between 10 PM and 5 AM.
