Health Department: Three more Medical Colleges to be established in Assam

Guwahati: In order to achieve the vision of bringing the facilities of health to all corners of the State the Government of Assam is going to start three new medical colleges as announced in Budget Speech. These three new Medical Colleges will be established in Tinsukia, Nalbari and Kokrajhar.

It may be mentioned that these new medical colleges will not only boost the medical education sector by producing more doctors in the state but also help in providing health care services in the area adjourning the districts of Nalbari, Tinsukia and Kokrajhar.

Addressing the media on Wednesday, State Health Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma said, "The estimated cost for the new medical colleges are for Nalbari Medical College is around Rs 398.31 crore, for Kokrajhar Medical College it is around Rs 382.70 crore and for Tinsukia Medical College it is around Rs 404.63 crore."

He further mentioned that the foundation stone of the above-mentioned colleges will be laid on January 2019.

It may also be mentioned that all the above medical colleges would have around 100 seat capacity for MBBS degree. Moreover, each medical college will have a bed capacity of 500.

Himanta further stated in the press conference that the under construction medical colleges in the state are Dhubri Medical College, Lakhimpur Medical College, Nagaon Medical College, AHMC &RI, Diphu will start functioning from the year 2020-21. These four medical colleges with 500-bed capacity each will have 400 seats for medical education.

Himanta also said adding that after completion of all the 13 medical colleges Assam will have a total of 1,426 seats for medical education.

Also, the minister talking about the existing six medical colleges in Assam- Gauhati Medical College, Assam Medical College, Silchar Medical College, Tezpur Medical College, Jorhat Medical College and Barpeta Medical College informed that these six colleges have at least 726 seats for MBBS education.
