GUWAHATI: Weeks after the election process concluded in the state of Meghalaya and Conrad K Sangma took oath as the Chief Minister, new controversies have started revolving the clash in the Mukroh village. Both the states of Assam and Meghalaya have laid their claims on the village.

The Bharatiya Janata Party MLA for Diphu, Bidya Sing Engleng had posted a written question regarding the village in the Assam state assembly. Answering the same, Himanta Biswa Sarma mentioned that the village comes under the jurisdiction of the state of Assam.

"According to the information provided by the Superintendent of Police (Border) West Karbi Anglong district, the clash between Assam Police and forest pirates of Meghalaya was not related to an interstate border dispute between the two states," replied the Assam chief minister.

Reacting to this statement by Himanta Biswa Sarma, the deputy chief minister of Meghalaya, Prestone Tynsong mentioned that the Mukroh village is a part of Meghalaya.

Towards the end of November 2023, an incident of illegal felling of trees in the forest areas and its transportation led to a clash between personnel with the forest as well as police departments of the state of Assam and local villagers. This caused the untimely death of a total six people, including five villagers and one forest guard.

The incident caused tensions to raise between the residents of both the neighbouring states and the interstate borders were sealed for a short duration. The situation was bought under control a few days later with the interference of both chief ministers. This incident found its mention in the election rallies of multiple parties.

It is important to note that the Bharatiya Janata Party is in power in the state of Assam while it is a coalition member and part of the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance II which is in power in Meghalaya.
