GUWAHATI: Assam Health, Finance, Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday took a jibe at the Congress for their 'Assam Bachao' campaign. The minister questioned the origin of the term 'Assam Bachao' and said that the term does not belong to the Assamese language.

He said, "In Assamese language 'Axomok Bachao' can be a term but 'Assam Bachao' cannot be an Assamese word. Where does that word come from? In this way, the Congress has shamelessly surrendered before Badruddin Ajmal and removed themselves from the hearts of the people of Assam."

Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections, launched a social media video contest as part of its manifesto building campaign called 'Assam Bachao'. APCC has asked the citizens of Assam to make two-minute-long videos about the biggest issues and problems Assam is facing today.

On being asked about the All-India Women's Congress president and Barak Valley Congress leader Sushmita Dev joining BJP, Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the Congress leader is welcome to join the saffron party but they haven't heard anything from her.

He further said that Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, who is camping in Assam and supervising the Congress', will witness a BJP government in Chhattisgarh itself.

Earlier on Sunday, Himanta Biswa Sarma took a dig at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi by saying he takes advice from "Arabic speaking people." The statement was apparently taking a dig at AIUDF leader Badruddin Ajmal.

The Congress has joined with the All-India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) and four other political parties to form a 'Grand Alliance' against the incumbent Sarbananda Sonowal led BJP state government for the upcoming assembly election in the state.

On Sunday, Rahul Gandhi flagged off Congress' campaign in Assam with a rally in Sivsagar. The Congress leader was seen wearing 'NO CAA' gamosa with other Congress leaders in tow.
