Guwahati: Assam BJP legislature party leader and CM-designate Himanta Biswa Sarma, outgoing CM Sarbananda Sonowal called on Governor Jagdish Mukhi at Raj Bhavan on Sunday to stake claim to form the next government in Assam.
The two Assam BJP leaders met the Governor after Sarma was unanimously elected as the leader of the Assam BJP legislature party at a meeting held earlier in the day in Guwahati.
Sarma and Sonowal submitted the letter of support from the MLAs to the Governor.
Himanta Biswa Sarma would be sworn in as the 15th CM of Assam. His Cabinet will also be sworn in at 12 noon on Monday.
BJP won 60 seats while its allies AGP won 9 seats and UPPL won 6 seats. Both AGP and UPPL had officially confirmed their support to Sarma as the next CM of Assam.
Preparations are underway at Kalakshetra for the swearing-in ceremony on Monday. It is customary and a tradition to hold swearing-in ceremonies in the Raj Bhavan but due to COVID, space has to be large enough to follow COVID protocols like social distance, it has been decided to hold the swearing-in at Kalakshetra instead of the Raj Bhavan or Governor's House.
DGP, Assam Police, Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta, other senior police officials and Deputy Commissioner of Kamrup Metro, Biswajit Pegu visited Kalakshetra to review the arrangements.
Sarma and Sonowal were accompanied by Assam BJP President Ranjeet Kr Dass, AGP President Atul Bora, UPPL President Promod Boro and other senior BJP, AGP and UPPL leaders.
