Himanta Biswa Sarma Seeks Fresh NRC, In Talks With AASU Over It

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanata Biswa Sarma has suggested that the National Register Citizens (NRC) should be conducted once again.

In this regard, the Sarma-led Assam government is also mulling to approach Supreme Court.

''We had said earlier also that the National Register of Citizens (NRC) should be reviewed and done afresh. We are in talks with All Assam Students' Union (AASU) is going on,'' Sarma said while interacting with media on Sunday.

The NRC consists of names of legal Indian citizens and it was first prepared in 1951. After this, it was updated in 2018 to weed out illegal immigrants from Pakistan but drew flak after it excluded more than 40 lakh people from it.

The draft NRC included the names of 2.9 crore people out of the total 3.29 crore applications. The updated list of citizens was published in August 2019 which had excluded 19.06 lakh, people, out of 3.3 crore applicants.

Notably, last Thursday, Assam Minister Atul Bora had said that the state government has decided to move on Supreme seeking re-verification of the NRC.

In this regard, a meeting was held between the Assam government and AASU leadership on the implementation of the Assam Accord on Thursday, he further informed.
