GUWAHATI: Assam Health and Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today participated in a bike rally along with 30,000 Bhartiya Janata Party BJP workers as a part of the upcoming Assam Assembly Elections slated to be held from March 27.
It needs to be mentioned here this is the first campaign after the declaration of the party candidates for the elections.
The bike rally was initiated from Jonai Gandhi School Field to Dhemaji's Silapathar.
"With blessings of Maa Kamakhya, Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardeva and Mahabahu Brahmaputra, I am beginning my campaign today with a bike rally from Jonai to Silapathar with 30000 karyakartas and well wishers," Dr. Sarma said in a tweet.
The BJP along with its alliance parties UPPL and AGP have completed a seat sharing arrangement for the ensuing elections. The leaders of the parties announced the list of a total of 104 seats at the national headquarters in New Delhi on March 5. While the BJP has declared the name of candidates for 70 seats.
Of the 104 seats, the BJP will field its candidates in 70 constituencies. The AGP and UPPL will contest in 26 and eight constituencies respectively. The list has excluded the names of 11 sitting ruling BJP MLAs and a Cabinet Minister. The State has 126 Assembly seats.
Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal will contest the elections from Majuli and Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma will contest the elections from Jalukbari. State BJP president Ranjeet Kumar Dass would fight from Patacharkuchi Assembly constituency, earlier, Dass won the 2016 Assembly elections from the Sarbhog Constituency. However, the decision to change the Constituency of State BJP president was taken after considering the demands of the local party workers.
Following the announcement of the names of the candidates, there has been a rift evolving within the party after some of the leaders were deprived of tickets to contest the forthcoming elections.
