LAKHIMPUR: The Hindu Yuba Chatra Parishad, Asom (HYCPA) has hailed central government’s initiative to implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the country.

In this connection, while addressing a press conference at North Lakhimpur Press Club on Tuesday, HYCPA central committee president Balen Baishya said that the organization submitted a memorandum to then Home Minister Rajnath Singh in 2014 by demanding the immediate implementation of the UCC in Assam as well as the nation. “But this important issue was a victim of negligence for a long time, which was unfortunate,” Balen Baishya said. The press conference was also attended by HYCPA central committee general secretary Madhab Das, executive member Bitumoni Gogoi, Lakhimpur district president Jugmajyoti Dutta, general secretary in charge Ghanakanta Borah and other members of the organization.

Notably, the Uniform Civil Code is a proposal which aims at replacing personal laws based on religion, caste, and tradition with one common law for everyone, irrespective of caste, creed, sexual orientation and gender. It is envisaged to provide one law for the entire country applicable to all religious committees in their personal matters such as marriage, divorce, inheritance and adoption. The UCC also aims to provide protection to the vulnerable sections. It will also simplify complex laws around marriage ceremonies, adhere to secularism’s ideal, and promote gender justice. The Uniform Civil Code bill will likely be tabled in the Parliament in the upcoming monsoon session as per report.

In the same press conference, Balen Baishya further said, “India must have one Constitution and uniform code for its citizens. In a country like India, which is governed by a secular Constitution, controlling the Muslim people by Shariyat Act is not only a violation of the Constitution, but also a challenge to the unity in the nation”.
