TANGLA: In an unfortunate turn of events, a destititute and homeless citizen was rescued by a group of citizens at Tangla town in Udalguri district on Saturday. The person was identified as Divyendu Chakravorty who is the son of reputed businessmen Late Malayendu Chakravorty an affluent family of undivided Darrang district. His father owned Chakravorty and Company in the heart of Tangla town of then Darrang district which had a galaxy of stores running from Bata shoes to grocery, drugs among others.

The family having sold all its properties is now scattered, the son of the proprietor have now been rendered homeless and spending life of a destitute living on the mercy of others.

A group of citizens including social worker Govindo Debnath, businessman Safdar Khan, Aradhan Dey, Raja Banerjee, Kamal Chowdhury after taking into cognizance the plight of the person facilitated for the grooming and clothing needs of the person and requested Niribili Old Age Home run by Unnayan Mancha NGO in Mangaldoi of Darrang district for providing shelther to the person. The secretary of the NGO, Binay Sarmah without a second thought have rehabilitated the person in the old age home. “We have a total of 12 inhabitants including females and male, we have received support and co-ordination of cross sections of the society and people often visit our place to donate food and other essential goods on their special occasions like anniversaries, birthdays,” said Sarmah. He further asserted that the old age home formed in 2019 works in districts like Kamrup (M),Darrang, Udalguri, Nalbari however we are yet to receive any government grant. “We only rehabilitate those who are homeless or there are no immediate family members to look after a senior citizen. We have reunited several inmates after proper medical treatment and counselling with their family members,” he added.
