GOLAGHAT: The 53rd foundation day of HPB Girls' College, one of the premier higher educational institutions of Assam, was celebrated on Wednesday. Due to the COVID situation, the celebration was low-key. However, drenched in nostalgia, students and alumni took to social media to express their unforgettable memories of the college, and wished for a stronger and vibrant future of the institution.
The event flagged off with hoisting of the flag by Pradip Saikia, the governing body president, followed by paying floral tribute to Hemo Prova Borbora, led by Principal Dr. Bipul Chandra Bhuyan. Dr. Deepa Phukan Baruah, Vice-Principal (Administrative), led the plantation drive as a souvenir of the celebration. As a part of the celebration, NSS unit of HPB Girls' College along with the students' union body distributed fruits to the inmates of the old-age home at Bengenakhowa.
One of the main events was the foundation day online talk on the topic 'Academic and Administrative Accreditation' by Prof. Jogen Chandra Kalita, Head, Department of Zoology, Gauhati University, and a noted academician of Assam. Dr. Sunil Handique, secretary of the 53rd Foundation Day Celebration Committee, moderated the talk. It was inaugurated by Principal Dr. Bipul Chandra Bhuyan. Dr. Jahnara Begum, a physician by profession and a prominent actor as well as the designated awardee of the 2nd HPB Girls' College Uddipana Award (2021), also delivered a short speech on the occasion. The HPB Girls' College Uddipana Award (2021) will be physically awarded to Dr. Begum when normalcy returns.
In 2020, Lovlina Borgohain, the first Olympic medalist from Assam, was presented with the 1st HPB Girls' College Uddipana Award. The award is presented annually to a budding talent from Assam as a token of recognition and encouragement.
