SILCHAR: A huge consignment of Phensedyl syrup was confiscated by Karimganj Police on the afternoon of Monday from the bordering region between the states of Assam and Tripura.
Karimganj police carried out an operation on April 4, which led to the capture of large amounts of contraband cough syrup named Phensedyl. The checking operation was carried out in the Churaibari region on the Assam- Mizoram- Tripura border.
According to reports, two thousand bottles of the contraband cough syrup were seized from a 6-wheeler vehicle belonging to a logistics company. The consignment was hidden in the truck and was on its way from Guwahati in Assam to Agartala in Tripura.
The market value of the seized consignment is said to be over Rs 10 lakh and the driver of the vehicle, Ranjit Baishya was arrested by the police for carrying the drugs in the truck. The recovery of contraband materials more than once from vehicles belonging to logistics services, raised doubts regarding their involvement in the transport of narcotic substances.
A few days back, the Border Security Force (BSF) seized approximately 221.96 gm of suspected brown sugar worth Rs 1.10 crore in Tripura’s Unakoti district from a train going from Silchar to Agartala, the official said. However, the suspect managed to slip away, taking advantage of the crowd of passengers, the BSF said. A Special Operation was launched by a team of BSF on Tuesday afternoon at Railway Station Kumar Ghat, wherein a thorough search of the coach of a train going from Silchar to Agartala was carried out following the specific input.
“During the search, a seizure suspected to be brown sugar was made from a white colour plastic bag left abandoned by the suspect, who managed to slip away taking advantage of the crowd of passengers,” the BSF said.
