GUWAHATI: In one of the biggest drug busts of recent times, cannabis worth Rs 15 crores was seized by a team of Assam Police. The capture was made in the Jorabat region on the edge of Guwahati City on Thursday.
According to sources, a team of Assam Police conducted a raid under the lead of the Joint Commissioner of Police Partha Sarathi Mahanta. The police team seized a truck, bearing the registration number HR 38 T 2913. It was found carrying cannabis weighing 2500 kg. The estimated value of the captured cannabis is said to be around Rs 15 crores.
Reports also mentioned that the truck was caring the captured narcotics from Manipur and was on its way to Guwahati when the police team intercepted it in Jorabat.
The driver named Ashok Kumar and the handyman named Jitendra Kumar were apprehended from the vehicle. They belong to Haryana and Uttarakhand respectively mentioned in another report.
Congratulating the Guwahati Police administration, the Assam Chief Minster also tweeted about the capture of the huge consignment of narcotics and the capture of the duo in connection to the same.
This capture is in alignment with the Assam chief minister's strict crackdown on the production and sales of all narcotic substances across the state. The Union Home Minister Amit Shah also told all the Superintendents of Police across the Northeast region to take all necessary precautions and measures towards the control the flow of all such material. Amit Shah was in Guwahati a few days back for the meeting of the North East Council when he made this statement.
In another separate incident, Assam police apprehended 1.26 kilos of heroin in Karbi Anglong. Of the people who were arrested in this regard, one of them belonged to Assam while the others belong to other states.
