MANGALDAI: Illegal smuggling of cannabis is rampant in central Assam districts bordering Arunachal Pradesh, allegedly in connivance with a section of corrupt excise and police officials.
Smugglers have now adopted new tactics for transporting cannabis consignment using cars. This has been evident from an incident on Sunday night when Darrang Police, after a hot chase, managed to seize a huge consignment of contraband cannabis from a Tezpur-Guwahati bound car.
Acting on tip-off and under the direction of the Superintendent of Police of Darrang, Amrit Bhuyan, a police team led by DSP (HQ) Mamoni Hazarika followed an Eon car bearing registration number AS 12 K 6940 from Dhula area and directed the Mangldai police to stop the car. The police placed barricade at Mangaldai but the car sped away without caring for the police barricade. The smugglers also defied the barricade at Sipajhar. The police team too continued the hot chase and finally managed to seize the deserted vehicle on the NH-15 near Singimari under Sipajhar Police Station.
