GUWAHATI: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma urged the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) MLA Sirajuddin Ajmal to learn the Assamese language after the video of the MLA refusing to speak in Assamese went viral on social media.
Speaking to the media, Assam CM said, "We cannot accept what Sirajuddin Ajmal has said. I request him to kindly learn the Assamese language. Staying abroad does not mean not knowing the language of your own state."
This comes after AIUDF MLA of Jamunamukh constituency Sirajuddin Ajmal allegedly refused to speak in Assamese before the media at the premises of Assam Legislative Assembly.
The legislator declared him and his elder brother as 'International figures' and stated that the AIUDF party is not limited to Assam alone as it is a national party now.
"I cannot speak Assamese; hence, I am speaking in English. AIUDF party is not limited to Assam alone, it's a national party now and my brother Maulana Badruddin Ajmal is an 'International Figure' so everyone should know it in English. It's my choice, I can speak in any language," said the MLA of Jamunamukh.
Earlier, Assam Congress chief Bhupen Bora accused All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) which had agreed to support Congress candidate of backstabbing and siding with the BJP.
AIUDF in reply had claimed that they would support Congress candidate under any condition but also blamed the Congress chief who had conspired against his own party candidate ahead of the polls.
