MANGALDAI: As the world celebrated Gandhi Jayanti (birthday of Mahatma Gandhi) as the International Day of Non-violence, following the declaration by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in 2007, Darrang district too celebrated the day with a day-long programme on Friday.

Darrang district administration organized Gandhi Jayanti programme at Gandhi Smriti Udyan here. Deputy Commissioner Dilip Kumar Borah ceremonially marked the beginning of the programme by lighting a lamp in a traditional way and offering floral tribute to the Father of the Nation. Mangaldai legislator Guru Jyoti Das, industrialist Mukul Chandra Deka, all the Additional Deputy Commissioners, media person Bhargab Kumar Das and other leading citizens also offered floral tribute.

Later, addressing the function, Deputy Commissioner Dilip Kumar Borah highlighted the ideology and teachings of Mahatma Gandhi and also spoke on their relevance in the present situation. "Mahatma Gandhi believed that the soul of India resides in the villages and that is the reason he always concentrated on the uplift of rural lives. Heavy industries can never be of the benefit and welfare of the rural people and hence, he preferred the cottage industries only to make common people self-sufficient. The biggest contribution of Mahatma Gandhi to the world is the policy of non-violence, which at present has been adopted in different foreign countries" said Deputy Commissioner Dilip Kumar Borah.

Taking part in the function, Mangaldai legislator Guru Jyoti Das made a fervent appeal to the younger generation to read and study about the teachings, life and works and ideologies of Mahatma Gandhi. "Civil societies around the globe today have taken up the policy of non-violence and recognized Mahatma Gandhi as a super human. It is the responsibility of every citizen of our country to follow the path shown by Mahatma Gandhi and we should concentrate more deeply in the development of our rural society and lives," he added.

Additional Deputy Commissioner Bijoy Bhaskar Reddy also spoke on the life and works of the Father of the Nation. Earlier, singer of repute, Pranjal Sarma and Rinti Moni Deka enthralled the audience with the rendition of Ramdhun and two bhajans while another singer of repute, Barnali Kalita also performed melodious bhajans. Synchronizing with Gandhi Jayanti celebration, the district Health department and district administration conferred felicitation on 20 cleaning staff of COVID Care Centres in recognition of their selfless service in the hour of crisis. The district administration also felicitated Frontline COVID warriors Dr Jadu Moni kataki and Nayana Parashar in the function.
