GUWAHATI: The Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati is working on the creation of a digitalised map of all the places of cultural and historical importance distributed across the state of Assam. They have undertaken a project with the same goal.

A project entitled "Annotated Atlas of the heritage sites of Assam: Using GIS (Geographical Information System)," will be implemented by the Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati, the premier central engineering institution of the Northeastern region.

A Memorandum of Agreement was signed by the Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati and the State Innovation and Transformation Aayog towards the preparation of this Annotated Atlus. The agreement was signed in the office of vice president Ramen Deka in the Janata Bhawan in Dispur of Guwahati. While the Chief Executive Officer of the State Innovation and Transformation Aayog, M S Manivannam signed on behalf of his organisation, Sukanaya Sharma, the Head of the Humanities and Social Sciences Department signed on behalf of the Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati.

This project will be implemented by the educational institution along with the Heritage Conservation Society of Assam. They aim to create an annotated map of the sites distributed across the state and create a visual representation of the cultures of the state of Assam along with its geographical as well as demographic markers. According to a statement, this project will include, "Digitised maps will be produced by using QR codes. The data can be uploaded in the public domain."

Once implemented completely, this project has the ability to add a whole new dimension to the tourism sector of the state and the entire northeast region. It will enable tourists to make their itineraries to visit select destinations at the perfect time or season of the year while taking into account the local heritage as well as festivals and events.
