Illegal brick kilns give rise to health concerns under Boko Revenue Circle

BOKO: Several illegal brick kilns have been established under the Boko Revenue Circle area in the Roumari village area. More than 50 illegal brick kilns have been set up by some miscreants near the Singra to Dagaon road, which have now become a concern for the local people as they have started developing breathing problems due to the pollution caused by these brick kilns.

The villagers of Roumari, Sahipara, Singra and Dagaon areas have been suffering from breathing problems since the last few weeks and it happened after miscreants burnt the green bricks (kutcha bricks) to make bricks. To make bricks they burn coal and wood logs for many weeks and this pollutes the air.

According to the Assam Bricks Kilns Establishment and Regulation Rules, 2013, brick kilns must be established at least 300 metres away from residential area having a minimum population of 100-150 people or 20 houses, including both kachcha/thatched and pucca houses, 500 metres from a residential area having a population of more than 150 or more than 20 houses, including both kachcha/thatched and pucca houses. However, brick kilns have been established in the villages where more than 1,000 people live, including children.

Also, brick kilns should be allowed only on such land which is certified as non-agricultural land by the Circle Officer concerned. But, in this case, brick kilns have been established in the paddy fields. These brick kilns even do not have chimney to control air pollution and such brick kilns are totally banned in the State.
