JAMUGURIHAT: The southern part of Sootea has been facing challenges from the illegal timber traders and forest smugglers at present. The matured and valuable saplings of government land have been cut down by forest smugglers at present. The State government has adopted measures like Amrit Brikhya Andolan to protect the natural environment. Forest smugglers, on the other hand, don't seem to care and keep felling trees from one side. The role of the forest department is not beyond doubt in this regard. According to information, the Bohorabheti area of south Sootea has become a hotspot for illegal timber trading at present. Many illegal sawmills have been installed in the southern part of Sootea.

Based on secret information from the local scribes of the Sootea area, a team of foresters from Biswanath reached the southern part of Sootea and seized two illegal sawmills and a huge quantity of timber. But the timber dealers managed to escape from the site. If the illegal cutting of trees is not prevented in due course of time then it won’t take much time for south Sootea to become a desert.
