BOKO: Sand mining in Hahim River near Hahim Bazar under Singra Range forest office at Boko is allegedly going on rampantly. The DFO, West Kamrup division launches operations against illegal sand mining and illegal timber business every time but due to the alleged nexus between smugglers and forest officers, sand mining goes on every night after 11 pm. In the meantime, 6 to 10 heavy dumpers wait at the Jarapara area on NH-17, which is around 13 km away from the spot where sand mining is done by excavators. After completing extraction of sand from the Hahim River near the Hahim beat office and Hahim Police Outpost, dumpers reach the spot and load sand by excavators and send it to Guwahati without any documents. The process is running smoothly every night.
DFO Kamrup West Division Dimpy Bora and her team recently seized sand mining machines from the Singra area under Singra Forest Range. She also launched many operations and seized timber-laden bicycles and trucks, and sealed many timber shops. The team also seized illegal sand-laden trucks, tractors and mining machines. But people of the Hahim area said that unless the nexus between smugglers and forest officers was broken, these illegal activities would never stop.
