LAKHIMPUR: The first and foremost meeting of the Joint Monitoring Committee (JMC) on the implementation of the Bodo Accord (Memorandum of Settlement), signed by Government of India, Government of Assam and Bodo Groups on January 27 in 2020, was held on Wednesday. The meeting was held under the chairmanship of Additional Secretary (North East), Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) through video conferencing.

Other members of the JMC, viz—Commissioner and Secretary, Home, Government of Assam; Inspector General of Police, Special Branch, Government of Assam; Principal Secretary of Bodo Territorial Council (BTC), Kokrajhar and representatives from BTR Accord signatories United Bodo People's Organization (UBPO) and All Bodo Students' Union (ABSU), along with the Secretary of Welfare of Plain Tribes & Backward Classes (WPT & BC), took part in the meeting from Assam Secretariat, Dispur, Guwahati.

The meeting reviewed the Bodo Accord and each and every point of its implementation. The Joint Secretary, (North East), MHA directed to the officials concerned of the Government of Assam to take necessary actions to implement the recommendations of the Accord as soon as possible. He expressed the Union Government's concern to implement the Bodo Kachari Welfare Autonomous Council (BKWAC) and its functioning after formation of the interim committee of the Council. He laid stress on the rehabilitation of NDFB cadres and resolving the issues of tribal people living in the forest areas of Assam as per the recommendations of the Accord.

The meeting further discussed the issue of illegal encroachment in the tribal belts and blocks of the State and the Additional Secretary (North East), Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) directed the Government of Assam to take necessary steps to resolve the issue at the earliest, informed UBPO State president Manoranjan Basumatary.
