Importance of commercial cultivation of coconut highlighted

Tezpur: A day long district level workshop on Scientific Cultivation Technology of Coconut and Value Addition was organized by KVK, Sonitpur, Napam on Friday at its campus. The programme was organized in collaboration with Coconut Development Board, Guwahati. The head, KVK, Sonitpur, Dr PC Deka, welcomed the participants to the workshop. The workshop was inaugurated by the District Agriculture Officer, Sonitpur, Prakash Ch Bora.

In his address, Bora highlighted the importance of commercial cultivation of coconut. Delivering his lecture as a resource person, Dr. Manuranjan Neog, Associate Director of Extension Education, AAU, Jorhat discussed about the scientific cultivation of coconut and prospects of coconut cultivation in the district.

Another speaker of the workshop, Dr. Bhakta Prasad Gautam, Prof.& Head, Deptt. of Horticulture, Biswanath College of Agriculture, discussed about the nursery raising techniques, pests and disease problems related to coconut cultivation. The various coconut development schemes, harvesting techniques and importance of value addition in coconut were discussed elaborately by E. Aravazthi, Deputy Director, Coconut Development Board, Guwahati.

The farmers were also demonstrated about the fertilizer application method in coconut. More than 100 farmers and farm women from different villages from the district participated in the programme. Arifa Mumtaz Begum, Subject Matter Specialist (Community Sc.), Namita Dutta, Subject Matter Specialist (Soil Sc.), Roji Chutia, Subject Matter Specialist (Agronomy), Sarmistha Borgohain (PAC), APART officials and other KVK staff were also present in the programme.
