As the country sees an exponential spike in coronavirus cases, mostly due to the Omicron type, Assam has tightened the reins in a new set of laws aimed at halting the virus's spread. Everyone who tests positive for Covid will be considered a possible cause of the new, highly contagious form.

"We believe there are multiple Omicron instances in Assam, but detection is taking longer than expected. For all Covid patients in Assam, the Omicron treatment protocol will now be followed "Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Chief Minister, stated today. Every two days, the number of cases doubles and the state is expected to reach its peak by January 20.

The night curfew will start from 10 p.m. and end at 6 a.m., as part of a new set of rules issued today.

Employees who have not been vaccinated will not be allowed to work in government offices after January 15, they will be granted unpaid absence.

Schools will be closed for children in nursery through fifth grade. For kids in grades 9-12, a hybrid approach will be implemented, in which they will attend classrooms in person three days a week and learn the rest of the time online.

So far, nine Omicron cases have been reported in the northeastern state, and all of the patients have tested negative.

At its peak, the state may experience 12,000 cases per day.

In the previous 24 hours, Assam has recorded 844 cases. Until this week, less than 200 cases were filed per day.
