LAKHIMPUR: Reaction against draft on delimitation continues in Lakhimpur district. Eminent citizens of Subansiri, Borkhamukh and Bhimpora Gaon Panchayat under Lakhimpur district are strongly opposing the recently published draft on delimitation, saying that the delimitation exercise is creating immense trouble in their minds. As per the draft proposal of the delimitation process, about 15 villages belonging to Subansiri and Borkamukh Gaon Panchayats, which fall under present 112-Dhakuakhana (ST) LAC are going to be included in 75-Nowboicha LAC, while 10 other villages of Bhimpora and Chauldhowa Gaon Panchayats under the constituency shifted to 111-Lakhimpur LAC.

The people of the Subansiri area are opposing the delimitation draft based on the fact that 112 Dhakuakhana LAC is reserved for ST, while 75-Nowboicha is a SC reserved constituency. So, the tribal people living in Subansiri, who are enjoying their political rights and privileges in Dhakuakhana would be deprived of their rights and privileges in Nowboicha.

Moreover, there is no straight route for surface communication linking Subansiri and Nowboicha headquarters, located around 100 km distance from Subansiri. Likewise, the tribal people of Bhimpora and Chauldhuwa Gaon Panchayats have complained about the reservation status as they fear that they would lose their political rights in 111-Lakhimpur is an unreserved constituency.

The irritated citizens of Subansiri and Chauldhuwa area assembled in a series of meetings and discussed forceful inclusion of their area in other constituencies without taking the local people into confidence..

“It is not favourable for us to join in another constituency leaving our own Dhakuakhana constituency. The Election Commission’s move to include our area in Nowboicha and Lakhimpur LACs without considering the peoples’ right and geographical contiguity cannot be accepted at any cost,” the senior citizens avowed.

Alleging that there is a ‘political conspiracy’ behind shifting their votership from 112 Dhakuakhana (ST) LAC to 75-Nowboicha LAC, the senior citizens of Subansiri in the meeting took rigid decision to stay with Dhakuakhana constituency and oppose the delimitation draft. Meanwhile, the senior citizens of Subansiri and Chaouldhuwa separately submitted a memorandum to the Election Commission of India through Lakhimpur DC, demanding to restore their villages in Dhakuakhana constituency.
