JORHAT: “It is estimated that there will be 36.36 crore diabetic patients in the world and 7.94 crore diabetic patients in India by 2030 and hence India is known as the Mecca of Diabetics. One in every four Indian is a diabetic,” said Prof N Rajendiran, senior consultant diabetologist from Apollo Hospital, Chennai while talking to reporters at the Jorhat Press Club after attending a free screening camp on Saturday.
Prof Rajendiran further that diabetes was not infectious and it could be controlled. “After we eat any food it is converted to simple sugar and from the small intestine they are absorbed and the blood sugar is increased. Immediately the hormone insulin is released from pancreas which brings down the blood sugar level to normal. Normal blood sugar in empty stomach should be 100 mg ms % and in two hours after taking any food it should be less than 140 mg ms %. If tested any time it should be less than 180 mg ms%. If this level increases then it is diabetes,” he said.
Prof Rajendiran said 50 per cent of diabetic patients do not show any symptoms and their diabetes is detected when they go for eye check-up, operation and pre-employment check-up. Diabetes is hereditary in nature but not an infectious disease. It can be easily managed by following lifestyle modification like stopping smoking habits, stopping alcohol, walking for 40 minutes daily, cycling, jogging, doing yoga and meditation and taking food and medicines regularly and on time, he added.
