'Indmax Unit of Bongaigaon Refinery to meet LPG needs of region'

DHUBRI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated the INDMAX Project of Indian Oil's Bongaigaon Refinery to the nation through virtual mode on Monday from Dhemaji along with other key infrastructure projects in the oil and gas sector.

A special function was organized near the INDMAX Unit of Bongaigaon Refinery in synchronization with the Prime Minister's event at Dhemaji. Situated in western Assam, Bongaigaon Refinery of Indian Oil is strategically placed to cater to the fuel requirement of Northeast India as well as neighboring countries like Bhutan.

The refinery produces various products like LPG, naphtha, MS, HSD, SKO, ATF, LDO, Furnace oil and raw petroleum coke. Talking to The Sentinel, Executive Director and Head of Bongaigaon Refinery, Siddhartha Pratim Barua informed that the Indane Maximization (INDMAX) unit of Bongaigaon Refinery was built for increasing the production of LPG and gasoline in the region.

Built at a cost of Rs. 2,582 crore and with a design capacity of 0.74 MMTPA, INDMAX project has enhanced the overall refining capacity of Bongaogaon Refinery from 2.35 MMTPA to 2.7 MMPTA and further expansion in line with North-East Vision 2030 is also on the anvil.

"The commission of this project has resulted in benefits both for the Refinery as well as the region. These benefits included the improvement in the Gross Refinery Margin (GRM) of the refinery due to increase in production of high-value green fuels LPG and BS-VI grade MS by eliminating surplus Naphtha and Black Oil components and more than four-fold increase in LPG production of Bongaigaon Refinery," Barua added.

Barua further said that for the region, this seamless accessibility to clean LPG fuel would boost the key driver of 'cleaner use of fossil fuels' as outlined by the Prime Minister in his energy roadmap of India. The Indmax Unit of Bongaigaon Refinery will make a significant contribution in meeting the LPG needs of the region, he added.

Barua also informed that this state-of-the-art INDMAX technology which was developed in-house by Indian Oil R&D is a shining example of the Prime Minister's vision of 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat'.

INDMAX is a proven technology that has witnessed successful implementation in both Guwahati Refinery in the year 2003 and at Paradip Refinery in 2015 thereafter. The technology has helped the refineries to achieve high yields of LPG, light olefins and high-octane gasoline.

A press release issued by the Refinery stated that the INDMAX technology has already made global strides and has put India on the world's energy map with the first-ever overseas licensing of the technology of Naftna Industrija Srbije (NIS) – a major energy company in Europe, for use at the Pancevo Refinery in Serbia. The Indian Oil corporate conscience along with steadfast business commitment and innovation also is about "CARE" for the society and Bongaigaon Refinery has been at the forefront of several CSR initiatives.
