Assam: International Conference on Environment, Climate Change Held in Dhing College

NAGAON: Internal Quality Assurance Cell, Departments of Botany and Economics, Dhing College, in association with Department of Economics, Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev Vishwavidyalaya, organized a week-long multidisciplinary international conference on environment, climate change and sustainability since June 20 at the college auditorium.

Over 150 delegates including teachers, students, NGOs and local media persons participated the conference in hybrid mode. The objectives of the conference deals with the scientific concepts that underpin modern biotechnologies and how innovations can be exploited for the development of products and processes such as biofuels, novel bioactive compounds and waste conversion technologies. Besides, it also explored the bioethical, socio-economic and regulatory aspects of environmental sustainability and the role of each and everyone in environmental protection, a release added here.

The conference was inaugurated by Dr Biman Hazarika, principal of the college, while professor HP Sarma, former rector, Department of Environment Science, Gauhati University attended the programme as chief guest. Dr SK Sarma, Department of Botany, Gauhati University, was present as the keynote speaker in the conference. In his inaugural speech, Dr Hazarika, principal of the college highlighted on the importance of environment.

Speaking on the issues, the keynote speaker professor SK Sarma laid stress on environmental protection and economic sustainability. Meanwhile in the technical session, the forest man of India, Padmashree Jadav Payeng elaborated his experiences on setting up the manmade ‘Molai forest’.

During the conference, Claudia Laricchia, Head of Social Mission and External Relations, Future Food Institute, Italy who joined the conference virtually discussed on food and climate change. Besides, Professor Hiranya Kr Nath, Department of Economics and International Business, Sam Huston State University, United States of America also participated in the programme and spoke virtually on environment, awareness and actions.

Professor Dr Saurabh Saha and Dr Ajit Devnath from Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev Vishwavidyalaya also spoke on the impact of climate change on agriculture in Eastern Himalayan region of India and emerging environmental health issues with special reference to waste management respectively, the release stated further.
