The International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking was celebrated at the Lokopriya Gopinath Bordoloi Regional Institute of Mental Health (LGBRIMH), which was organized by the Department of Addiction Medicine in collaboration with Addiction Psychiatry Society of India (APSI).

TEZPUR: The International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking was celebrated at the Lokopriya Gopinath Bordoloi Regional Institute of Mental Health (LGBRIMH), which was organized by the Department of Addiction Medicine in collaboration with Addiction Psychiatry Society of India (APSI). On this occasion, a CME and PG Development Programme titled ‘Opioid Addiction: A North East perspective’ was organized. Eminent speakers across India delivered talks on various aspects of opioid addiction.

Dr Hemanta Dutta, Head of the Department of Addiction Medicine, LGBRIMH welcomed participants during the inaugural address. There were a total seven sessions encompassing various aspects of opioid addiction. The panel of speakers included Prof. Dr. Aniruddha Basu, Prof. Dr Atul Ambekar, Dr Dhrubajyoti Bhuyan, Prof. Dr Prabhat Chand, Dr. Ashwin Mohan, Dr Diptadhi Mukherjee and Dr Tathagata Mahintamani. The topics deliberated upon ranged from neurobiology of opioid addiction to available treatment options and practical issues faced by clinicians during practice. Dr Aniruddhu Basu, Associate Professor, Department of Psychiatry, AIIMS, Kalyani delivered a lecture on the topic ‘Neurobiology of addiction: Special emphasis on opioid’.

Dr Atul Ambekar, Professor, National Drug Dependence Treatment Centre and Department of Psychiatry, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi and Secretary General Addiction Psychiatry Society of India (APSI) delivered a lecture on the topic ‘Opioid Addiction Epidemiology in India: Special Focus on North East’.

Prof. Dr SK Deuri, Director of the institute, emphasized reduction in stigma associated with drug abuse and provision of treatment and quality care to the person with drug abuse. An interesting online quiz among the residents added flavour to the academic programme. Postgraduate psychiatry trainees from various medical colleges of Assam and other colleges including AIIMS Kalyani participated in the CME.
