DOOMDOOMA: The International Mother Language Day which was observed globally on February 21 to promote linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism, was observed at Doomdooma at the conference hall of Doomdooma college jointly under the auspices of Doomdooma Sakha Xahitya Xabha (DSXX) and Assamese Department of Doomdooma college. The programme got underway with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp in memory of the martyrs of mother language by Bimala Baruah, DSXX president. It was followed by a chorus 'Chira chenehi mor bhakha janani' rendered by Diki Sonowal and her team.

Dr Rinjumoni Sarma, Vice-Principal of the college, welcomed the guests. Appointed speaker of the function Tarangamalla Baruah, Vice-President Tinsukia Xila Xahitya Xabha, dwelt on at length the apprehension and danger that loomed large over the Assamese language at present. Assistant Professors Pancham Bodo, Jame and Shila Sonowal delivered speeches in their mother languages while Jame and Pancham presented songs in their mother language. The meeting which was anchored by Assistant Professor Deepak Baruah and Secretary, DSXX Deben Deka, was also attended by Arjun Baruah, President, Tinsukia Zila Xahitya Xabha, former teachers Mrigen Saikia, Nirala Chaudhury, Secretary, Asam Chah Karmachari Sangha, Hitendra Baruah and students and teachers of the college.

On the other hand, the day was also observed at Padma Nath Gohain Baruah (PNGB) Government Model College, Kakapather situated at Dirak Kapahtoli under the auspices of its Internal Quality Assessment Cell (IWAC). The meeting which was inaugurated by Principal Thanuram Majinder was addressed by Co-ordinator, IQAC and Assistant Professor, English Department, Sanjib Kalita on the subject.

He spoke on the importance of Information technology in the teaching of the multilingual medium. On the other hand Assistant Professor, English department, Akangshita Sarma, opined that the medium of learning in the mother language could not be an impediment for higher education or in acquiring language proficiency of foreign languages. Assistant Professor, Assamese department, Lakhi Prasad Dihingia in his speech while pointing out some of the now extinct languages of the North-east India, deliberated on the role of the new generation in preserving the Assamese and the languages of other ethnic groups living in the State. Dr Dipen Basumatari, Dr Azijur Rahman and Dr Rimi Bora also spoke briefly on the subject. The meeting which was anchored by Panchanon Hazarika was also addressed by two students of HS first year - Parbin Begum and Lakhindra Moran. The programme came to an end with the presentation of Axam Sangeet.
