Numaligarh: Kaziranga National Park authority, in collaboration with other nature organizations, observed the International Rhino Day on Tuesday.
A day-long programme was held at Paramananda Lahon auditorium in Kohora range to observe the special occasion. KNP Director, P. Sivakumar inaugurated the programme and also offered the welcome speech. Honorary Wildlife Warden of Golaghat, Uttam Saikia and KNP Research Officer Rabindra Sharma offered audio-visual presentations on species, population, distribution and behaviour of rhinos. Later, rhino documentaries were displayed by WWF, WTI, Aaranyak and Kaziranga National Park authority.
National Geographic Channel documentary Save this rhino by world famous cricketer Kevin Peterson was also screened in the programme. The meritorious children of the forest employees, who performed well in the last HSLC and Higher Secondary examinations, were also felicitated by the Forest Employees' Welfare Committee. Essay and photography competitions were held on the occasion of World Rhino Day and the winners of the essay and photography competition were also awarded in Tuesday's programme.
Deputy Commissioner of Golaghat, Bibash Chandra Modi, Deputy Inspector-General of Police Satyaraj Hazarika, Superintendent of Police of Golaghat, Pushparaj Singh and other forest officials were present in the programme. In the afternoon, a discussion on the topic 'Rhino conservation: Challenges in the present context' was also held in the Mihi Miri auditorium in Kohora. The discussion was moderated by Honorary Wildlife Warden of Golaghat, Uttam Saikia.
Dr. Anupam Sharma of WWF, Dr. Rathin Barman of WTI, Kaziranga DFO Ramesh Kr. Gogoi, Biswanath DFO Mukut Chandra Das and others participated in the discussion.
