International seminar on importance of Ahom Moidams gets underway in Nazira

SIVASAGAR: Under the aegis of Directorate of Archaeology Indigenous and Tribal Faith and Culture Department, Government of Assam, and in collaboration with the Nazira Subdivisional Administration, an international seminar on 'Importance, Sacred Landscape and Value-Based Management of the Ahom Moidams of Charaideo in Assam (India)' kicked off at the Bharat Ratna Dr BR Ambedkar Auditorium, ONGC, Nazira on Thursday.

Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly, Biswajit Daimari along with Sonari MLA Dharmeswar Konwar, Mahmora MLA and Revenue Minister Jogen Mohan, and Boroma MLA Bhupen Bodo, Chief Secretary to the Government of Assam, Jishnu Baruah, Secretary to the Tribal Faith and Culture Department, Seema Rekha Bhuyan, Sivasagar Deputy Commissioner Megha Nidhi Dahal, Jorhat Deputy Commissioner Ashok Kumar Barman, Charaideo Deputy Commissioner Paul Baruah, Executive Director of ONGC, Nazira, RK Sharma, other dignitaries and a large number of delegates from Thailand and Sri Lanka, as well as professors from various educational institutions and a number of historians took part in the inaugural event.

In his speech, Biswajit Daimari, Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly, lauded the initiative of the Department of Archeology and said that this initiative would help in preserving the glorious monuments of Assam's history for the future. The Speaker expressed the view that this effort would play an important and far-reaching role in establishing the history of the 600-year-old Ahom dynasty in Assam at the world stage. He said that this platform would pave the way for scientific and comparative analysis of the technical and scientific aspects of architecture and sculpture of the Ahom dynasty.

Jishnu Baruah, Chief Secretary to the Government of Assam, said that the seminar would help in building the Charaideo Moidams as a World Heritage Site.

Later, representatives from Thailand and Sri Lanka, as well as professors and students from various educational institutions, led by the officials of the Department of Archeology, visited all the archeological sites in the Charaideo district. They also visited various ethnic villages and cottage industry centers in Sivasagar district. The first day's programme ended with a host of cultural programmes. This seminar will conclude on March 12.
