LAKHIMPUR: The birthday of Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, former President of India, celebrated as International Students' Day was observed in Lakhimpur Commerce College on Saturday.

A meeting was organized on the occasion which was chaired by Dr. Lohit Hazarika, Principal of the college. The objective of the meeting was explained by Achyut Kumar Gogoi, Assistant Professor in Assamese. Sazzad Hussain, Head of the Department of English and eminent columnist, attended the meeting as appointed speaker. In his speech, Professor Hussain highlighted the significance of the day focusing on the life and works of Dr Kalam and his activities as a teacher. Gopal Kumar Chetry, Vice Principal of the college, also spoke on that occasion. The president of the students' union of Lakhimpur Commerce College, Mohit Kumar Taparia spoke on behalf of the students in the meeting. The entire meeting was held under the management Mahesh Dutta, Assistant Professor of Sociology.

On the other hand, a placement drive by Aditya Birla Capitals Limited (ABCL) was also conducted at the college for corporate appointments in the company. The placement initiative was conducted by the Career Guidance Cell of the college. The coordinator of the cell, Dr Biva Dutta welcomed the students for the placement drive by ABCL. The general manager of ABCL, North Lakhimpur Kabindra Saikia, Regional Manager-Training, ABCL Sankar Jyoti Saikia and Associate Partner Iftiquar Ahmed conducted group discussions and personal interviews of selected students in the programme. The shortlisted candidates will be called for further interview and placed for appointments, said ABCL Associate Partner Iftiquar Ahmed after the completion of the programme.
