GUWAHATI: "Though the BJP in power in Assam, actually the Congress is running the government,'' said the main Opposition party's district committee in a sarcastic tone.
After former MLA Bhupen Bora was appointed as the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee's president, the Lakhimpur committee mocked the ruling BJP that all the major portfolios of the current dispensation are held by some Congress turncoats including Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, "We have not seen a single original BJP leader holding an important portfolio in the current government.
All the important portfolio holders were former Congress leaders. Himanta Biswa Sarma was our party leaders. Finance Minister Ajanta Neog and Water Resource Minster Pijush Hazarika were also with the Congress once,'' said a district Congress leader. Castigating the BJP's Ache Din slogan, the Congress leaders said that the economic condition of the majority of people has broken down.
"We will realize the actual state of the people after the lifting of COVID-19 restrictions. People did not benefit from the Ache Din slogan. Congress will revive again. Just wait and watch,'' he said, recalling that celebrated cartoonist RK Laxman once drew a caricature mocking the Congress. But contrary to Laxman's caricature, the Congress survives, he further said.
Meanwhile, two-time Congress MLA Sushanta Borgohain is reportedly set to join Assam's ruling party BJP on August 2. Borgohain, who represents the Thowra constituency in the Assam Assembly, is likely to resign from the Congress party anytime soon.
Borgohain had defeated BJP candidate Kushal Duwari in the Thowra constituency and was elected to the Assembly. Notably, Sushanta Borgohain will be the second MLA from the Congress party to join the BJP after the saffron party comes to power in Assam for the second time.
Speaking to the media, the Congress MLA told that Assam BJP leadership has invited him to join hands with them. Earlier, in June 2021, former Mariani MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Notably, Kurmi tendered his resignation letter to Assam Assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimari on Friday and resigned from the Congress too.
After his resignation, Kurmi spewed venom against State Congress president Ripun Bora, senior leader Rockyibul Hussain, and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, alleging their inefficient leadership for the ill-fate of Congress in the consecutive elections in the State and across the nation.
