JAMUGURIHAT: Jamuguri Police resorted to blank firing at Panpur to disperse an angry mob that had attacked police personnel on Tuesday night.

According to information, some shops and business establishments of the Panpur area were open in violation of the government SOP. A team of Jamuguri police reached Panpur at around 7 pm on Tuesday to ask the businessmen and traders to close their shops and business establishments. A gang of miscreants allegedly attacked the police team with bamboo sticks, hooks, spears and threw stones at the police personnel.

To control the unruly mob, the police started to open fire. After the blank fire, the mob scattered but two police personnel were injured and a Bolero van was damaged. A team comprising the district magistrate and police officials from Sonitpur district reached the site on Tuesday night and took stock of the situation. The conscious people of the greater Panpur area condemned the incident.

In this connection, a public meeting was held at Panpur on Wednesday. Safikul Islam, Additional Superintendent of Police, Sonitpur, Akashdeep Kakaty, the Circle Officer of Naduar Revenue Circle, Pranjal Kumar Nath, officer in-charge of Jamuguri PS along with the village headman and Panchayat representatives held a meeting and asked the local people to take action against the miscreants involved in the attack.
