LAKHIMPUR: Jeevan Raksha Padak, awarded by the Government of India, was conferred to two courageous teenagers of Lakhimpur on Monday in a ceremonial programme held in a befitting manner. They are Manoj Chaontal, son of Sunu Chaontal and Birsi Chaontal, and Raju Garh, son of Tapan Garh and Lilimai Garh, residents of Machkhowa and Majgaon villages under the Ghilamora Revenue Circle of the district.
Jeevan Raksha Padak is a civilian life-saving award, which is rewarded for saving lives from drowning, fire or mine accident. It is awarded for courage and promptitude in saving lives under circumstances of grave bodily injury to the rescuers.
The Defence Ministry under the Government of India has awarded 48 people of the nation with this award for the year of 2018 for their life-saving acts they did in that year. Among them are included Manoj and Raju who rescued a kid named Abinash Chinte, son of Mukut Chinte and Sunita Chinte, resident of Bilmukh village of the district, while he was being washed away by the rapid surge of flood caused by the rivers Jiadhol and Na-noi on June 5 in 2018. Regarding the incident, a report was published in The Sentinel at that time.
On Monday, Lakhimpur Deputy Commissioner Dr. Jeevan B conferred the award to the two courageous teenagers with a cheque of Rs. 1,00,000 and citation in the ceremonial programme held in the Lakhimpur District Library auditorium under the auspices of the district administration.
Participating in the programme, academician Dr. Mukunda Rajbonshi as chief guest and North Lakhimpur College (Autonomous) Principal Dr. Biman Chandra Chetia delivered encouraging speeches addressing the students present in the programme from various schools and colleges of the district. Lakhimpur Development Deputy Commissioner Reena Mech, ADC Dipankar Das and DIPRO Mandira Chayengiya were among those who were present in the event.
