KAZIRANGA: The leopard which injured several people in and around the Rain Forest Research Institute located in the Jorhat district of Assam died during treatment. The wild leopard succumbed to his injuries at the Center for Wildlife Rehabilitation and Conservation in the Panbari region of Assam Assam.

A wild leopard caused a huge menace at the Rain Forest Research Institute. Expected to have come from the Hoollongapar Gibbon Sanctuary located near the institution, it entered several homes and injured several people. 15 people including three forest officials were arrested by the leopard. Authorities were finally able to sedate it after more than a day of menace.

It was taken by the authorities to the Center for Wildlife Rehabilitation and Conservation for a proper investigation after being tranquilised at the institution in the early hours of Tuesday.

According to reports, the leopard was injured during the time when it was trying to escape since Monday and released a reign of terror in the region. Although the team had tried hard to revive the animal, they finally failed in the attempt even after an operation. The death of the wild leopard was reported in the morning hours of Thursday.

According to the Veterinary expert with the Center for Wildlife Rehabilitation and Conservation, Panbari, Dr Samsul Ali the leopard had severe injuries on its body when it was brought for treatment. He mentioned that the injury was consistent with that of a dao (local machete ) attack. A formal autopsy was conducted at the premises according to the rules and further steps will be taken.

Another incident of leopard attack took place in the Dibrugarh district of Assam on Wednesday. Two people were injured in this incident.
