Jorhat: Jorhat police arrested two persons from Haryana on Sunday on charges of appearing as proxy candidates in a recruitment examination held for Grade-IV posts of Multi-Tasking Staff in Rain Forest Research Institute (RFRI).

The arrested persons have been identified as Charan Singh and Amit Singh, residents of Jind district of Haryana.

The officer-in-charge of Jorhat police station, Ananta Das, said, "Charan Singh and Amit Singh, hailing from Jind district of Haryana, have been arrested while two of their associates, including a lady, have been picked up."

Based on a complaint lodged by an RFRI official at the Jorhat police station, a case has been registered (No: 2725/2020) under sections 120 (B), 417, 419, 468 and 479 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Charan had appeared for one Anil of Haryana while Amit appeared for one Dipak, also from Haryana at the Jorhat Government Girls' Multi-purpose Higher Secondary School, one of the four examination centres in Jorhat.

Police officer Das said that the incident had come to light after a female candidate raised an alarm as Charan took out a mobile phone during the examination time.

The invigilator had asked him to produce his identification papers which did not tally with the person supposed to be appearing the exam.

The invigilator and other and officials at the centre handed over Charan to the police personnel deployed at the centre for cross-checking and later during interrogation, his fake identity was revealed.

Meanwhile, another proxy candidate, Amit, was caught red-handed from the same centre and was taken away by the police.

The examination was held for 12 RFRI posts.
