GUWAHATI: In a tragic incident that took place in the morning hours of Wednesday, a journalist lost his life in a road accident that took place in the Beltola region of Guwahati.

According to the police, the incident took place in the morning hours of Wednesday when the journalist was on his way to his office from his home on his two-wheeler. His vehicle was hit from behind by a city bus leading to the death of the person.

The journalist has been identified as Mushtaq Alam working with a media house in the city. He was moving from his home near Basistha Mandir towards his office on GS Road.

The incident took place when a speeding city bus bearing registration number AS 01 HC 2629 hit the journalist from behind as it was trying to overtake him. Police personnel reached the spot of the accident almost immediately and seized the city bus.

Meanwhile, several parts of Guwahati city suffered severe traffic congestion in the first half of Wednesday. While parts of the city including the Maligaon-Kamakhya region and the Zoo Road suffered from the usual traffic congestion because of the ongoing flyover construction work, locations including Bharalumukh, AT Road, Guwahati Club, Ulubari, Bhangagarh, Supermarket and Six Mile experienced much heavier traffic than usual.

Even the national highway suffered much higher traffic than usual because of the movement of the performers as well as VIPs and security personnel to and from the Sarusajai Stadium. The increased number of buses used to ferry the performers led to congestion in several key points of the city. Also the increased number of vehicles as well as people that have arrived in the city to be a part of the celebration that is scheduled for the evening of Friday.
