TINSUKIA: The journalists of the State took to the streets after the Assam Union of Working Journalists (AUWJ) made an appeal to journalist associations to register their protest against the alleged physical assault on a Gauripur-based (Dhubri district) journalist by a security person on September 13.

In response to the AUWJ's call, the Tinsukia District Journalists' Association (TDJA) on Thursday submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister of Assam through the Deputy Commissioner of Tinsukia, Diganta Saikia, seeking his immediate intervention to arrest the alleged accused - Subrata Sarkar, a jawan of Assam Battalion - who physically assaulted Arun Paul, a correspondent of a vernacular newspaper and general secretary of Dhubri district AUWJ, with a sharp weapon while he was returning home at night after work. Paul sustained head injury.

Though a case was registered against Sarkar, he is still at large. Kamal Talukdar, vice- president of AUWJ south-east zone, and Umesh Singh, assistant secretary, of behalf of TDJA handed over the memorandum to the Tinsukia Deputy Commissioner.
