Guwahati: The Government of India has appointed Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia as the new Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court. The appointment was announced in a notification released by the Ministry of Law and Justice on Thursday.
The appointment of Justice Dhulia as the new Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court was recommended by the Supreme Court Collegium in December 5 last year.
The notification of Ministry of Law and Justice declaring the appointment of Justice Dhulia read,"In exercise of the powers conferred by clause (1) of Article 217 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia, Judge of the Uttarakhand High Court, to be the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court with effect from the date he assumes charge of his office."
Chief Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia takes over the charge from Justice Nongmeikapam Kotiswar Singh who earlier served as the Acting Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court. Notably, Justice Singh was appointed in the sitting position on September 21 last year after the retirement of Chief Justice Ajai Lamba.
It is worth mentioning that with the appointment of Chief Justice Dhulia, the Gauhati High Court now has a total strength of 25 judges. Also, with the appointment made official for Gauhati High Court, all the 25 High Courts of India now have regular Chief Justices.
Born and brought up in Uttarakhand, Chief Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia hails from a family of legal practitioners and freedom fighters. Justice Dhulia completed his education from Sainik School, Lucknow and was even an alumnus of Allahabad University. One of his brothers is the noted film director Tigmanshu Dhulia.
Notably, Justice Dhulia started his legal career by initially practicing before the Allahabad High Court in 1986. Back then, when he was part of the bar, he served as the legal counsel for institutions like Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee.
Justice Dhulia then practiced in Uttarakhand High Court on matters relating to Civil, Constitutional, Service, and Labour areas. He has also specialized in Service and Constitutional matters.
Earlier, on November 1, 2008, he was appointed as a permanent judge of the Uttarakhand High Court.
