Guwahati: Assam Transport Minister Chandramohan Patowary has directed the Transport Department to suspend the District Transport Officer (DTO) of Kamrup (Metro) district and 3 others for alleged "irregularities in motor vehicle tax."

At the minister's behest, the department has suspended Arun Bora, Kamrup (Metro) DTO; Simanta Neog, Head Assistant; Arup Kumar Barman, Junior Assistant, and Sidhheshwar Ranghang, Cashier, with "immediate effect."

According to reports, this step was undertaken after the "occurrence of irregularities regarding the deposition of motor vehicle tax" was brought to the attention of the Assam Transport Department under minister Patowary. Consequently, an inquiry was conducted to conduct a probe into these alleged discrepancies.

The investigation revealed that the DTO of Kamrup (Metro) was allowing the evasion of taxes, wherein a vehicle owner could pay the current year's tax by skipping the arrear – something which is in clear violation of the existing rules.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Transport has been instructed to conduct a detailed inquiry into the matter. The Transport Department hopes to recover the taxes that it is owed as data has been stored in the National Informatics Centre (NIC) database.

The Transport Department had a detailed meeting today with the NIC authorities as they maintain the Vahan portal, and directed them to plug technical loopholes to prevent any such irregularities in the future.
