Guwahati: Jaysingh Bey, a divisional forest officer (DFO) from Karbi Anglong district of Assam succumbed to death on Sunday night at the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) in Guwahati, said reports. He was COVID-19 positive.

According to reports, Bey, who was the in-charge of the 'West' division, was undergoing treatment at the GMCH after developing a COVID-19 infection. Ber's wife had also earlier tested positive for the virus, but a later test revealed her status as 'negative'. Bey was reportedly en route towards recovering from the infectious disease but succumbed to death late at night on Sunday due to some underlying conditions. With Bey's death, the COVID-19 death toll in the hill district has risen to 4.

Meanwhile, the Karbi Anglong administration has mourned the demise of the DFO. CEM of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC), Tuliram Ronghang, mourning the death of the officer, wrote on Twitter, "I am sorry 1 more Covid19 patient dies from Karbi Anglong, Joysing Bey, 59 years, DFO, i/c West Division. With this, the toll rises to 4️⃣. He showed signs of recovery, however, due to other complications he expired last night at 10.05 pm. He died a hero's death, while on duty (sic)".

Meanwhile, there has been a steady rise in the number of COVID-19 infections as well as deaths across Assam. To date, 32,228 people have been infected with the viral disease, out of which 79 cases have resulted in fatalities. With 23,055 patients already discharged from hospitals following recovery, the number of active patients now stands at 9,091.
