DIPHU: The Karbi Students’ Association (KSA) has expressed serious concern over the State government notification served to Diphu Government College, Haflong Government college and some deficit colleges like Rangsina College, Thongnokbe College, Rukasen College, Eastern Karbi Anglong College and Maibong Degree College to affiliate under the proposed Rabindranath Tagore University, Hojai. This notification has not gone down well with the student body. KSA does not want affiliation to the newly-proposed university because those colleges were already under the administrative purview of the Sixth Schedule Autonomous Councils.

Karbi Students’ Association president Semson Teron said in a press release that the hills people already had an Assam University campus in Diphu. They had been demanding full-fledged university in the Diphu campus, but to their utter dismay, a notification was issued by the State government vide notification no. AHE.384/2017/15 dated March 18, 2019 without proper intimation with KAAC and DHAC.

“So, we term the decision as unilateral and illegal. It is also an act of encroaching upon Sixth Schedule autonomy by the Assam government which may lead to exploitation and suppression of the educational rights of the Hills people. Hence, we condemn the decision and urge the State Government to roll back the decision at the earliest. If the government fails to fulfil our demand, we will be bound to initiate a strong democratic movement against the State government,” he added.
