SILCHAR: The story is of a Karimganj girl Pollabi Deb Roy who sets world record in making idol of Durga in her own concept and artistic design with a difference. She made the largest statue of Goddess Durga by recycling products. The size of the idol was 6 ft. She used plastic packets, spoons, aluminium sheets, cardboards and clay model to make the idol and achieve the feat. It was in 2018 that Pollabi made the idol which was a matter of appreciation in social media. It was after two years that her work of art got a place in International Book of Records.
Pollabi got a call from international book of records to send her application for consideration. She sent all relevant documents and letters of appreciation from different organisations which were further endorsed by Karimganj press club. After long evaluation and appraisal, good message came to her about the recognition of her talent.
Owing to corona pandemic, her citation and medal were sent by post. At a simple get together in his office, Deputy Commissioner of Karimganj, Khageshwar Pegu, handed over the citation and medal to Pollabi Deb Roy in presence of Arup Roy, general secretary of Karimganj Press Club and other members on Thursday. The Deputy Commissioner while admiring Pollabi for her work suggested proper use of wastes of municipal board. He called upon Pollabi to think and explore the possibility of job creation.
Arup roy was all praise for the artiste and congratulated her on her talent and to bring into focus in international forum the name of a far-flung border town of India. Pollabi said, "I could not ever dream my little effort will bring international laurels for me." She would strive to achieve more. She in particular thanked her parents and Karimganj Press Club for encouraging and inspiring her.
