GUWAHATI : A 54 year old businessman was allegedly kidnapped from Silchar district of Assam on Saturday. A special police team rescued the man from Mizoram's Vairengte on Sunday in healthy condition.

As per the reports, the victim has been identified as Selim Uddin Barbhuyan, aged 54 years. He was  found at a house of a Mizo divorcee woman in Vairengte, stated the police. Although a person has been detained in connection with the abduction, the police denied to reveal the identity of the accused as of now.

It is suspected that Selim Uddin Barbhuyan and the kidnappers had some financial links with each other in the local raw supari trade, as the kidnappers who reportedly demanded 10 lakh rupees from the victim's family, had previous transactions and conversations with Selim.

As per the sources, Selim is a resident of Badarpur ghat in Karimganj district. He visited Silchar for some business purpose when few abductors threatened him with daggers. Selim was alone in the car when the abductors whisked him away. The accused stopped the car in the Sonai road area on Saturday night.

GP Singh, the ADGP (law and order) mentioned that, Selim was rescued from Vairengte, Mizoram. A special team of police managed to rescue the victim from a Mizo woman's house who reportedly carries out an illegal racket in Vairengte. According to sources, the kidnappers also demanded ransom money from the victim's family for his release.

An FIR has been registered at the Rangikhari police station, and the department has already started an investigation into the matter. As per the details mentioned in the FIR, Selim Barbhuyan was travelling for a business meeting via Sonai road on Saturday evening when he was allegedly dragged off by a few miscreants armed with sharp weapons. A senior police officer stated that, this might not be a case of kidnapping but no official statement will be passed without thorough examination.
