Guwahati: Dhaijya Konwar, an incarcerated peasant leader from Assam, was granted bail by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) Special Court on Friday (July 17) against a surety of Rs. 30,000.

"We are pleased that the Special Court of the NIA has accepted the bail plea of Dhaijya Konwar. NIA Special Case no. 2/20. The case had sections dealing with waging war against the nation and instigation", a member of Konwar's legal counsel told The Sentinel Digital.

Konwar, who is undergoing treatment at the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), had been picked up by the police in the midst of the protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act that raged across Assam at the turn of the year. The Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) will be allowed to return home once his sample tests positive for the COVID-19.

Now, all eyes will be fixed on the bail plea of Akhil Gogoi who is yet to be given bail in two cases filed over his involvement in the protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act) that seeks to grant citizenship to the people of Assam. Yesterday, Akhil was given bail by the Gauhati high court in three cases filed by the Chabua police station in Dibrugarh for his involvement in the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act protests. Case number 289/19 will be heard by the Gauhati high court on July 20 and 13/19 by the NIA special court on July 21.

Akhil Gogoi was arrested in the thick of the anti-CAA agitation in Assam, where he was a prominent figure. The case was handed over to the NIA with the issuance of an order by the Union Home Ministry on December 14. Gogoi, the Adviser of KMSS, tested positive for COVID-19 inside Guwahati Central Jail on July 11 and was shifted to GMCH for treatment.

In the ensuing days, Gogoi's aides Dharjya Konwar, Bitu Sonowal, and Manas Konwar were all arrested by NIA under the Unlawful Assembly Prevention Act (UAPA) for 'waging war' against the nation.
