KOKRAJHAR: Kokrajhar district administration, on Saturday observed the District Foundation Day with various programmes at Kokrajhar Science College Auditorium Hall and Bashbari High School. A free medical camp and check up of cancer was held at Bashbari High School, Bishmuri as part of the observation of the day.

Addressing before the gathering the Minister of Welfare of Bodoland department UG Brahma said Kokrajhar was created as district on July 1, 1983 and a grand celebration was held at Government HS & MP School playground. He said before becoming a district, Kokrajhar was unknown to other parts of the country because it was very backward in all spheres. He said people came to know about Kokrajhar when it was declared as sub division and later as one of the districts of Assam as railway station, hospital, Kokrajhar College, an overbridge came one after another.

“Now, Kokrajhar has become administrative headquarter of BTC and its importance is increasing fast as Kokrajhar has become a centre of many higher education like Bodoland University, Central Institute of Technology, BB Engineering College, Kokrajhar Medical College and Hospital, Nursing College etc.”, he said adding that Kokrajhar got Mushroom production under One District One Product (ODOP) programmes which is very significant in agriculture sector.

Brahma said since Kokrajhar became an emerging district in all spheres, it is important to think for the development of human resources. He thanked the Bihu dancers from Kokrajhar district who participated in the presentation of over 11,000 Bihu dancers to get in to Guinness Book of World Record on April 13 and 14 at Sarusajai Stadium in Guwahati. He gave away the certificates of participation and cheque of Rs. 25,000 each to 103 Bihu dancers from Kokrajhar on the occasion.

MLA Lawrence Islary in his speech said Kokrajhar district had passed a long 40 years with different histories. He said Kokrajhar district was still backward in many fields. He cited example of records of pass percentage of HSLC examination of Kokrajhar which was surpassed by newly created Chirang district. “We must take the position of Kokrajhar district in highest level with full maturity in every direction”.
